How to Reduce Packaging Material Cost Without Compromising Quality

Right-size before you re-source

Before switching suppliers or grades, check whether you're using more material than the job needs — overly thick stretch film, oversized tape width, or over-strapping lighter cartons are common, easy-to-fix sources of waste.

Buy on micron and grade, not just price per roll

A cheaper roll that's thinner or shorter in length can end up costing more per shipment once you account for how many rolls you use. Compare cost per metre or per kg at the actual micron and length you need, not just the sticker price of the roll.

Order in bulk, factory-direct

Buying in bulk quantities directly from a manufacturer, rather than through multiple layers of distribution, is usually the single biggest lever on cost — without changing the material itself.

Match the grade to the job

  • Use hand-grade stretch film only where machine-grade isn't required
  • Use standard BOPP tape width for light cartons, reserving heavy-duty for genuinely heavy loads
  • Use PP strapping where PET's extra strength isn't actually needed

Matching grade to job, rather than defaulting to the strongest available option everywhere, is often where the real savings are — with no drop in protection where it matters.
