Stretch Film vs Shrink Film – When to Use Which?
The core difference
Stretch film is stretched and wrapped around a load — typically a pallet — using its own elasticity to hold everything together. Shrink film is loosely wrapped around a product and then heated, so it shrinks tight around the shape. They look similar but are used for very different jobs.
When to use stretch film
- Wrapping full pallets of cartons for warehouse storage or transport
- Bulk loads that need to be held together but not individually sealed
- Situations where speed matters more than a tight, finished look
When to use shrink film
- Multi-packs — bundling several units (like bottles or boxes) into one retail-ready pack
- Individual product wrapping where a tight, tamper-evident, retail-presentable finish is needed
- Irregular-shaped products that stretch film can't wrap cleanly
Can you use both?
Yes — many operations use shrink film at the product or multi-pack level, and stretch film at the pallet level for transport. If you're not sure which grade or micron fits your product, share your requirement and we can recommend a starting point.
